Francis X. McConville holds a BS degree in Chemistry and MS degrees in both Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has worked in the chemical industry and related fields for more than 26 years, including 14 years as a process engineer at Sepracor, Inc. He has helped scale up chemical and biochemical processes in Asia, Europe and North America. He now operates a consulting business and lives with his family in Worcester, Massachusetts. He also dabbles in watercolor and plays bluegrass and jazz mandolin in several central New England acoustic bands.

Teaching everything for successful pilot plant operation

"Pilot plant real book" to be exact; "Pilot Plant Bible" not an exaggeration.

I felt lucky to get a copy of this book BEFORE setting my foot into pilot plant. I found it extremely useful in transitioning into pilot plant operations from R&D laboratory environment. For these two, many things are same in principles but different in real operations. The book teaches everything: reactors, fittings, material compatibility, pumping, heat exchange, distillation, recrystallization, etc. In doing so it truely helps practitioners to sacel up reactions successfully and safely. I used it as a textbook initially to learn pilot plant operations and it is for sure a wonderful reference book as well.

Practical/Technical Review

This book is a must have for any working chemical engineer, chemist or chemical technician in the pharmaceutical industry. The author has compiled a tremendous amount of information that is easily accessible and applicable to practical chemical development. I reach for it now when I need a reference for chemical property data, equipment information and other working knowledge. I work in a scale-up lab and find this text invaluable.

He closely compares the actual lifestyles of the settlers with the popularly held, uncomplimentary image.

Separate chapters deal with slavery and the lives of the slaves and with Indian affairs, particularly the dispossession of the native Quapaws and the later-arriving Cherokees. Political chapters explore opportunism in Arkansas Territory, the rise of the Democratic Party under the control of the Sevier-Johnson group known as the Dynasty, and the forces that led Arkansas to secede from the Union. In addition, Arkansas’s role in the Mexican War and the California gold rush is treated in detail.

In truth, geographic isolation and a rugged terrain did keep Arkansas underpopulated, and political violence and a disastrous experience in state banking tarnished its reputation, but the state still developed rapidly and successfully in this period, playing an important role on the southwestern frontier.

Great History of Early Arkansas

Arkansas 1800-1860: Remote and Restless is a great history of early Arkansas by Charles Bolton. This entry in the Histories of Arkansas series takes the reader from early American settlement through Arkansas' antebellum period.

Although we think of the frontier as being the Wild West, Arkansas was very much the frontier during the period covered in this book. Bolton does a fine job of capturing the spirit of this frontier society, from hopeful settlers to the elite planters and politicians that eventually led Arkansas into the Confederacy and the Civil War. Particularly interesting are descriptions of the state's bank failures, which crippled early finance in the state, the Family or Dynasty that ruled Arkansas politics through most of the antebellum period, and how Arkansas was on the cusp of an economic boom just as the Civil War arrived and swept it all away.

This a must-read for those wanting to learn more about early Arkansas.

The information in this book is well thought out and seems to be mostly complete. The author seeks to include as much data as possible pertaining to the various topics on early Arkansas history. This therein lies the rub. Though much data is included, the author fails to adequately crunch the numbers down so they are readable. The barrage of statistics in this book makes many of the chapters difficult to read. The other aspect of this book that lowers its rating is the fact that the author seems to feel the need to impress his colleagues more than provide a readable book for the public. Word choice throughout the book seems to rely heavily on a thesaurus and less on common language. Though I slogged through the book and learned a fair amount from it. I have concluded that there is a market for a book on the same topic that is more readable.

Not Just Raising Men--Raising Parents, Coaches, Educators, and Leaders, too.

I understand why Eric Davis wrote this for men about sons. This book is so much more than that, however. It's not only one of the best parenting books I've ever read, it's a book all educators, coaches, and civic club leaders must read. Even if you don't have kids, you'll love this personal journey filled with motivation, leadership training, and success tactics practiced by Eric and his fellow SEAL instructors.

Not everyone will be able to do the SEAL stuff, but everyone can do this: spend more time building relationships with your kids, refuse to be or allow children around "dream killers," and instill confidence in your children or any child you encounter by believing in and demanding the best from them--and modeling the same.

"Raising Men" made me want to push myself more, not just for my son, but for myself, too.

Whether you are raising men, girls or a family this book will impact you as a parent. As parents, we get so sidetracked by the outside world we lose focus on our most valuable treasures. This book really helps to remind you of your role, talents, and worth as a parent. Eric Davis has a way of putting things in perspective with his strong but humorous tone. Its a must read by all parents!

Highly recommend this book

This is the first review I have ever written. Normally I am the one who reads others reviews but never leaves one myself. This time I feel compelled to give my opinion because I am not a father or a male. I am female, newly married and trying to have kids. I know this book is entitled Raising Men and is geared towards fathers but I read it anyways.

I am giving it 5 stars because it doesn’t just to speak to men or how to raise sons . It is easy to apply most of what Eric says to raising daughters and/or being a great mother. Eric lays down a foundation on how to be a responsible parent and have a positive presence in your child’s life. He really puts emphasis on the fact that you, the adult, have to lead a good life first. You need to figure out what that is and start implementing it in your daily life. He uses the phrase “lead from the front” and really emphasizes the importance of being a responsible adult/parent and how to be present and engaged in your child’s life. He does this by sharing with you some of his own personal experiences and also adds in personal stories told by other highly respected special forces operators. One of the things I like most is at the end of each chapter. Eric asks you, the reader, questions about the content and principles discussed in that chapter. He gets your mind thinking about what you are or not doing as a parent and how you think you can improve on that. I find this technique very helpful because it makes it personal. He is engaging you to contemplate your own actions and how they affect the people you love.

About the Author

Darren Cambridge is a senior consultant at the American Institutes for Research in Washington, DC, USA, where he serves as project director and principal investigator for the U.S. Department of Education's Connected Online Communities of Practice project. He was previously a faculty member at George Mason University, a director at the American Association for Higher Education, and a fellow with EDUCAUSE. He co-leads the Inter/National Coalition for Electronic Portfolio Research and serves on the board of the Association for Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence-Based Learning. He has developed technical specifications IMS Global Learning Consortium and open source eportfolio software through the Sakai Foundation. His work appears in a range of scholarly journals and books. He is author of Electronic Portfolios for Lifelong Learning and Assessment (Jossey-Bass, 2010) and co-editor of Electronic Portfolios 2.0: Emergent Research on Implementation and Impact (Stylus, 2009).

About the Author

CHRISTOPHER D. PIROS, PhD, CFA, is the Managing Director of Investment Strategy and Chairman of the Investment Policy Committee at Hawthorn, a member of the PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., which is dedicated to serving the needs of individuals and families with investable assets in excess of $20 million. Prior to joining PNC, Mr. Piros served on the team responsible for the curriculum underlying the Chartered Financial Analyst� designation. He also has served as Director of Investment Strategy & Portfolio Management at Prudential Investments LLC, the wealth management services arm of Prudential Financial. He was a global fixed-income portfolio manager and head of fixed-income quantitative analysis at MFS Investment Management.

JERALD E. PINTO, PhD, CFA, is Director, Curriculum Projects, in the education division of the CFA Institute. Prior to joining CFA Institute, he consulted with corporations, foundations, and partnerships in investment planning, portfolio analysis, valuation, and quantitative analysis. Pinto also worked in the investment and banking industries in New York, and taught finance at NYU Stern School of Business. He holds an MBA from Baruch College, a PhD in finance from the Stern School, and is a member of CFA Virginia.
