Indeed,,Danielle,Steele continues to capture my heart...after how,many years? I love. the fantasy, the wealth and the solid story line. Winners is my current favorite since I have been a quadrapelegic,,and I am happy that ms. Steele has a leading character here in A Perfect Life who is blind. Thank you for another fine, fun, engrossing read. Now how long do we have to wait for the next one?

Horrible dribble. It could have been written in one-third of the pages. Redundant. Oh yah, redundant. Did I mention the narrative was redundant? But that's probably not the worst of it. The worst was the flat, non-developed characters and a story line that was incredibly predictable.

Author Mike Fitzgerald masterfully weaves Moore's 200-plus fights and his personal life into an engaging and evenly-tempered biography. Until now, most books written on Moore tended not to let the facts get in the way of a good story. Fitzgerald, with the cooperation of Archie Moore and his immediately family, finally tells the true story of the "Old Mongoose" with pleasing results. If you're an Archie Moore or boxing fan, this book's for you.

Great profile; leaves out one important matter

This is an excellent portrayal of one of boxing's all time great fighters, whom I had the pleasure of meeting. (He felt that shaking hands was unsanitary, and preferred touching fists.) This book tells of Moore's early struggles, th eproblems he faced as a black fighter, and his ultimate triumph. One reviewer says that this book doesn't mention Moore's alleged tanking of the Marciano fight. I have never believed that he threw that fight, as he fought long and hard against tough odds. Also, he was a 4-1 underdog, which would have made a fix in Marciano's favor unlikely. What this book doesn't mention -- and which film showings of this bout often edit out -- is that when Moore floored Marciano in the second round, Rocky rose at the count of two, and the referee, forgetting that the mandatory eight count didn't apply in a title bout, continued the count, thus giving Marciano extra time to recover. Marciano was clearly stunned, and had the ref followed the rules the outcome might have been different. In Everett Skehan's excellent biography of Rocky Marciano, this incident is mentioned.

This is a good and detailed account of Archie's life and times. Perhaps it was the written style of the author but I did tend to get a bit bored at times while reading . All-in-all, it's pretty much everything you'll ever need to know about this boxing legend.

About the Author
Zareer Dadachanji is a quantitative analysis consultant with nearly two decades of corporate experience, mostly in financial quantitative modelling across a range of asset classes. He has spent 14 years working as a front-office quant at banks and hedge funds, including NatWest/RBS, Credit Suisse and latterly Standard Chartered Bank, where he held the position of Global Head of FX Quants.

Zareer's specialist areas of expertise are the modelling of FX and equity derivatives. He combines these specialist areas with substantial knowledge of general quantitative modelling, gained through years of senior-level engagement in the activities of global cross-asset quant teams. Zareer holds a triple first in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Computational and Theoretical Physics, both from the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Nerida Ellerton has two doctoral qualifications: one in theoretical and physical chemistry and one in mathematics education. She is an experienced teacher, with a specialist focus on mathematics and has taught at elementary, secondary and college levels. She was Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Southern Queensland for four years and is currently a full professor at Illinois State University in the Department of Mathematics.

Dr. Jinfa Cai is an affiliated Full Professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware. His primary appointment is in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. His research interests include cognitive studies of the teaching and learning of mathematics, mathematical assessment, cross-cultural studies, problem solving and teacher education.

About the Author
Frank Miller began his career in comics in the late 1970s and rose to fame while first drawing, and then writing, Daredevil for Marvel Comics. He was also the creative force behind Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One, and Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again.� His many works have not only redefined classic characters, but also, on a few occasions, revitalized the comics industry. His creator-owned Sin City hit the page in 1991, and then the silver screen in 2005 — with Miller on board as co-director. His multi-award-winning 300 graphic novel was brought to full-blooded life in the 2007 motion picture of the same name, and in 2008 he directed the feature film of Will Eisner’s The Spirit.

Jeph Loeb is an Emmy award nominated and Eisner award winning writer/producer living in Los Angeles. ��In television, his many credits include Smallville, Lost and Heroes and in film, Teen Wolf and Commando. ��In comics, he is best known for his work with the supremely talented artist and partner-in-crime TIM SALE on BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN, SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS,CATWOMAN: WHEN IN ROME for DC as well as Daredevil Yellow, Spider-Man Blue and Hulk Gray for Marvel.

Scott Snyder is the bestselling and award-winning writer of Batman, American Vampire and Swamp Thing as well as the short story collection Voodoo Heart.� He teaches writing at Sarah Lawrence College, NYU and Columbia University. He lives on Long Island with his wife, Jeanie, and his sons Jack and Emmett.� He is a dedicated and un-ironic fan of Elvis Presley.

Printed on Terrible, Cheap Paper

IMPORTANT: This review is not a commentary on the content of these three graphic novels, which are masterpieces, but on the cheap paper used to print these specific 75 anniversary box set editions. Once again, DC gives us non-glossy, flimsy paper. As a result, the coloring is not crisp but actually bleeds over the lines. It's terrible to the touch and to the eye. These works are definitely worth reading and owning BUT don't buy this collection. Aside from a nice box to contain these graphic novels you are better off buying them in their separate editions from previous years which are printed on glossy, heavier paper worthy of their beautiful art and seminal storytelling. I give this 75th anniversary box set collection 1 star for the outrageously terrible paper and 5 stars for the actual stories so they average out to 3 stars. Indeed, this particular edition of these works is exactly what 3 stars mean: it's just "okay."

Horrible paper quality - the worst way of collecting these great stories

As a reviewer already stated, this collection is printed on horrid paper, thin and cheap, which cannot take the amount of ink required. The binding is also very tight and can be qualified as a "mousetrap". It is a much better idea to buy these stories separately in other editions.

Save your money

I opened this up and was immediately disappointed by the quality of the cover. I then flipped through each book and was even more disappointed by the cheap paper and horrible binding that was used to print these wonderful stories on. You are much better off purchasing each one individually. About 10 minutes after I opened this set, it was on its way back to Amazon.

Struggle

Jihad means struggle and this is a story of some of the struggles of a native of Bangladesh who fortuitously finds himself living a dream as a graduate student in the United States, with a professor who becomes both mentor and friend. Alas, a stroke strikes the professor and the student struggles with the decline and passing of his "old man". The trail soon leads to the rescue of a Texas cockroach, through the anonymous canyons of New York City, and on to Saudi Arabia, where he goes on his pilgrimage to Mecca. His hajj quickly becomes a struggle to maintain his pure spiritual intent with the many frustrations of navigating the crowded rituals with his companions. Spiced with quotations from Muslim mystics his pilgrimage becomes an unforgettable story.

Later there are further struggles, grappling with the nature of sin, a spendthrift brother, the evidence for evolution, the pressures of work and family, unintended consequences, the rumor mill, and even whether man truly has a free will. A further and comical life and death struggle ensues when an uninvited guest, a small snake, joins a dinner party at his home in Oman.

Years later, the author struggles with the reality of his youthful dreamland of America, his beacon of freedom, human dignity, human rights and the rights of other nations becoming dimmed for him by events after 9/11. He concludes with a final struggle that touches on his heroes, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, and how they free him from his negative perception of an American President.

The Jihadi is an eclectic and enjoyable read for anyone who enjoys contemplating the many struggles of life.
