A Catholic looks into the world of American Judaism circa WWII.

This book is about two Jewish teenagers growing up while in intermediate school through college, describing the religious and psychological aspects of their journeys. They both graduate a Jewish college summa cum laude. You can almost see that coming throughout the book. The author provides the spoiler for the climax of the book and we just watch that roll downhill to its conclusion.

There are several levels or spheres of fantasy in the book, one is the near absence of women characters, who when they occur, merely fill in the gap for someone to cry at the right time, etc. Another level of fantasy (relative to my own life) is the intense level of multi-language study of the main characters, even in adolescence -- my academic and intellectual achievement was markedly delayed, so I admire the progress of the main characters. Another sphere of fantasy is the absence of any concern about money for anything -- wish my life was that easy. There is a fantasy of being surrounded by a cast of chronically, and often acutely, ill people, family and strangers -- the author gives the reader so many things to worry about, and does a good job of that. The author is trying to force feed our souls, as the father-figures force feed their sons.

Beautiful coming of age story of friendship and finding meaning in life

This is a beautifully told story about the friendship of two Jewish boys who confront the fundamental differences between their fathers as they struggle to grow up. The characters are carefully drawn and developed as the events unfold. I love the theme of passionate commitment to finding meaning within a religious belief system and within community that forms the core of this novel. I have read it many times, and it still moves me and nourishes me.

Excellent Book

Enjoyed this book tremendously. My 13-year-old son was required to read it for school over the summer, and I read it when he was finished. Very moving story of fathers and sons. I loved learning more about the Jewish culture and history. I kept my cellphone near as I was reading to occasionally look up Jewish terminology that I didn't know. This book was educational as well as easy to read and a wonderful, touching story.

An unassuming grey book with interesting insights into sights usually unseen.

It appears to be an unassuming grey book. The words “Post Mortem" are printed in black typeface. As an object, Patrik Budenz's book Post Mortem is delicate to hold, light in weight, simple and clean, much like the environments represented in the photographs, once you open the cover: the environment of the modern day mortuary.

Mortuaries were not always a de facto part of death. Prior to industrialization, most people died at home in the company of family, who were also responsible for the deceased's body. Today, most people die alone, and their bodies are transported from their residences or care facilities to the local mortuary where they are cleaned and prepared for either cremation or viewing.

The idea of mortuaries can conjure up grim, unsettling imagery from movies and television, but Budenz eschews the sensationalist approach for a compassionate, respectful insight into the processes and preparations for the recently deceased.

The first image sets a direct, reflective tone with a large metal shelving array, neatly filled with corpses in translucent body bags, toe tags exposed. The images immediately following are close ups of the recently dead. In one photo we see a face, lips puckered, ashen. Beyond it we can see sutures stretching on along the length of the entire chest. Budenz uses a subdued colour in his photos, emphasizing the absence of life, and often shoots his subjects uncomfortably close. Though they are not gruesome, the images grip us with the realization that life no longer inhabits these bodies.

In five sections, unnamed and unnumbered, Budenz walks us through the various stages of a body's transition through the mortuary. The images show us the surgical aspects of preparing the body, and the process of transforming a lifeless body to look the way they did when alive. Photographs of white linen and lace here underscore a sense of purity and serenity.

Later, Budenz peers into the cremation oven. A closed casket enters a large kiln; a flame-engulfed skeleton shrivels in the heat, until all that remains is the metal fastenings that held together the casket. The images of this formal, sterile process of handling human bodies work together to remind us of our inevitable return to dust. With tenderness, Post Mortem takes the viewer into a passage we are all destined to cross through.

Waste of money!

Very disappointed! The book was expensive and I was so looking forward to it. The photos were good, BUT there were no words to explain the photos. It would have been nice to get a little description with the photos. And the size of the book!! Again, for the money I spent, I was expecting more. A larger book with more content!!

My Africa!, Fugard tells the story of a white South African girl who becomes involved in debates with a black South African boy and his teacher, but as the racial tension increases, tragedy becomes inevetable. Fugard tells a powerful story which not only addresses the racially charged South Africa he is from, but race relations and the need to realize the differences between people of race are only skin deep.

I don't actually like or agree with this author and I think many of his points have some significant (intentional) gaps and oversights. I only read this because it's a topic I read about frequently and I needed this for a class. It is very dry reading.

This is a landmark book in American history and should be required reading for anyone with even a passing interest in criminal justice. Wilson's seminal work changed forever the delivery of police services to the public. This book stood conventional wisdom on it's head and provided the template for criminal justice reforms for the past 40 years.

About the Author

Lee G. Bolman holds the Marion Bloch/Missouri Chair in Leadership at the Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He consults worldwide to corporations, public agencies, universities, and schools. In addition to his many books with Terry Deal, he is also coauthor of Reframing Academic Leadership with Joan V. Gallos.

Terrence E. Deal left active university life as the Irving R. Melbo Clinical Professor of the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education. He is the coauthor of twenty-three books, including the bestselling Corporate Cultures (with A. A. Kennedy, 1982) and Managing the Hidden Organization (with W. A. Jenkins, 1994).

Bolman and Deal are also coauthors of Leading with Soul (now in its third edition), Wizard and Warrior, and their forthcoming book, Reframing Leadership (also from Wiley).

Surprisingly good for a text book

This is hands down the best text book I have ever had for a college class. Material is well presented, with tons of real business stories (and from companies I know). This makes applying the concepts in the book really easy. The book is also easy to read. If there is any complaint, it is that they try almost too hard to help you relate the concepts, and I find myself skimming or skipping over sections, because I already got it.

The first couple of chapters are a bit of a bore - I felt like in chapters 1 and 2, they were still trying to sell me the book. Once you get past that, it really is a joy.

I am not quite sure why people are giving this one and two stars, unless it was a class they just did not enjoy and are going to tear up everything, including the text book. For the rest of us, this is quite a pleasant read - not something I would read for fun, but at least its interesting

This reads like a suspense novel and just sucks you in

I give this book a Five star out of Five.

I took an online course and having an electronic version of the text was a big bonus and only makes sense because I could access it and complete my readings from anywhere, including my iPhone.

Unlike most business texts, the narrative writing style, almost casual, gave the concepts context and drove them home. For example, take the introduction to chapter one, “Steve Jobs had to fail before he could succeed. Fail he did. He was fired from Apple Computer, the company he founded, and spent eleven years “in the wilderness” (Schlender, 2004).” (Kindle version location 77 of 2328). This reads like a suspense novel and just sucks you in.

The authors pulled information from a great variety of interesting real life sources, and if the like watching current events then this book is perfect. And if you like the subject matter, Organizational development, then this is even better.

The other thing I liked about this book is the APA citation style. For me, this whole thing about properly citing sources is new and while reading other texts, learning what is wrong and right can be overwhelming at times. I am still struggling to understand the whole thing.

The book itself is a great introduction into the complex subject matter of organizational framing. From my readings, I understand this can become quickly involved and confusing with managerial lingo, statistics and all levels of psychology. So this book does break it down and after reading it I can now tackle the more in-depth books and know my way around or at least know exactly what they are referring to, and pull examples out of my mind to better understand the concepts. So I would definitely recommend this book to someone who has no clue what the subject matter of Organizational Behavior is all about.

As an aspiring leader, a manager and an aspiring business owner, I will keep this coming back to this book for a little longer after this class.

Surprise for a Textbook!

I purchased this book for an Ed.S. course I am currently enrolled in. I wasn't sure how engaging it would be since honestly most textbooks aren't written to be engaging, but almost purely informative. That being said, t his is one of the few textbooks I have had to read over the years that I don't really mind sitting down to read at all! It came very quickly, and the packaging was great to protect it while being shipped.

The book itself is focused primarily on how to look at leadership through different lenses, or as they refer to them frames. It gives MANY real world examples and could apply to nearly any area of leadership, business, education, or otherwise. Like I said, very easy to read and not at all textbook-y. If you have to purchase this for a course I think you will be pleasantly surprise by the content and structure of the book!
