A Catholic looks into the world of American Judaism circa WWII.

This book is about two Jewish teenagers growing up while in intermediate school through college, describing the religious and psychological aspects of their journeys. They both graduate a Jewish college summa cum laude. You can almost see that coming throughout the book. The author provides the spoiler for the climax of the book and we just watch that roll downhill to its conclusion.
There are several levels or spheres of fantasy in the book, one is the near absence of women characters, who when they occur, merely fill in the gap for someone to cry at the right time, etc. Another level of fantasy (relative to my own life) is the intense level of multi-language study of the main characters, even in adolescence -- my academic and intellectual achievement was markedly delayed, so I admire the progress of the main characters. Another sphere of fantasy is the absence of any concern about money for anything -- wish my life was that easy. There is a fantasy of being surrounded by a cast of chronically, and often acutely, ill people, family and strangers -- the author gives the reader so many things to worry about, and does a good job of that. The author is trying to force feed our souls, as the father-figures force feed their sons.

Beautiful coming of age story of friendship and finding meaning in life

This is a beautifully told story about the friendship of two Jewish boys who confront the fundamental differences between their fathers as they struggle to grow up. The characters are carefully drawn and developed as the events unfold. I love the theme of passionate commitment to finding meaning within a religious belief system and within community that forms the core of this novel. I have read it many times, and it still moves me and nourishes me.

Excellent Book

Enjoyed this book tremendously. My 13-year-old son was required to read it for school over the summer, and I read it when he was finished. Very moving story of fathers and sons. I loved learning more about the Jewish culture and history. I kept my cellphone near as I was reading to occasionally look up Jewish terminology that I didn't know. This book was educational as well as easy to read and a wonderful, touching story.
