About the Author

Florence Mihaela Singer is a full professor in the Teacher Training Department of the University of Ploiesti, Romania. Her expertise is in curriculum design and development (all grades, all subjects for pre-university education), curriculum administration, teacher training, textbook development (mathematics), Educational management, and international consultancy in education.

Dr. Nerida Ellerton has two doctoral qualifications: one in theoretical and physical chemistry and one in mathematics education. She is an experienced teacher, with a specialist focus on mathematics and has taught at elementary, secondary and college levels. She was Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Southern Queensland for four years and is currently a full professor at Illinois State University in the Department of Mathematics.

Dr. Jinfa Cai is an affiliated Full Professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware. His primary appointment is in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. His research interests include cognitive studies of the teaching and learning of mathematics, mathematical assessment, cross-cultural studies, problem solving and teacher education.

About the Author
Frank Miller began his career in comics in the late 1970s and rose to fame while first drawing, and then writing, Daredevil for Marvel Comics. Printed on Terrible, Cheap Paper

IMPORTANT: This review is not a commentary on the content of these three graphic novels, which are masterpieces, but on the cheap paper used to print these specific 75 anniversary box set editions. Once again, DC gives us non-glossy, flimsy paper. As a result, the coloring is not crisp but actually bleeds over the lines. It's terrible to the touch and to the eye. These works are definitely worth reading and owning BUT don't buy this collection. Aside from a nice box to contain these graphic novels you are better off buying them in their separate editions from previous years which are printed on glossy, heavier paper worthy of their beautiful art and seminal storytelling. I give this 75th anniversary box set collection 1 star for the outrageously terrible paper and 5 stars for the actual stories so they average out to 3 stars. Indeed, this particular edition of these works is exactly what 3 stars mean: it's just "okay."

Horrible paper quality - the worst way of collecting these great stories

As a reviewer already stated, this collection is printed on horrid paper, thin and cheap, which cannot take the amount of ink required. The binding is also very tight and can be qualified as a "mousetrap". It is a much better idea to buy these stories separately in other editions.

Save your money

I opened this up and was immediately disappointed by the quality of the cover. I then flipped through each book and was even more disappointed by the cheap paper and horrible binding that was used to print these wonderful stories on. You are much better off purchasing each one individually. About 10 minutes after I opened this set, it was on its way back to Amazon.

Struggle

Jihad means struggle and this is a story of some of the struggles of a native of Bangladesh who fortuitously finds himself living a dream as a graduate student in the United States, with a professor who becomes both mentor and friend. Alas, a stroke strikes the professor and the student struggles with the decline and passing of his "old man". The trail soon leads to the rescue of a Texas cockroach, through the anonymous canyons of New York City, and on to Saudi Arabia, where he goes on his pilgrimage to Mecca. His hajj quickly becomes a struggle to maintain his pure spiritual intent with the many frustrations of navigating the crowded rituals with his companions. Spiced with quotations from Muslim mystics his pilgrimage becomes an unforgettable story.

Later there are further struggles, grappling with the nature of sin, a spendthrift brother, the evidence for evolution, the pressures of work and family, unintended consequences, the rumor mill, and even whether man truly has a free will. A further and comical life and death struggle ensues when an uninvited guest, a small snake, joins a dinner party at his home in Oman.

Years later, the author struggles with the reality of his youthful dreamland of America, his beacon of freedom, human dignity, human rights and the rights of other nations becoming dimmed for him by events after 9/11. He concludes with a final struggle that touches on his heroes, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, and how they free him from his negative perception of an American President.

The Jihadi is an eclectic and enjoyable read for anyone who enjoys contemplating the many struggles of life.

While replowing much of the same landscape as other social media marketing guides, this academic treatise offers two appealing, redeeming features: numerous fresh examples of campaigns which illustrate specific tactics and, for the academically inclined, an extensive bibliography of market research papers and articles. Professor of marketing Allan J. Kimmel focuses on how new media change the practice of marketing, but his presentation suffers from repetition and overuse of labels and diagrams. Perhaps this is the byproduct of the deluge of marketing research and new theories that drive the advertising business. getAbstract recommends this well-researched book to research-driven marketers, academics and marketing researchers.

FANTASTIC BOOK FOR THE BEGINNER

Simplified Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist is comic art instruction Guru Christopher Hart's latest book and one of his best yet. Hart has been doing comic art instruction books for many years with a long list of titles to his credit. In this latest book, Hart tackles the modern, more simplified, and streamlined comic book art. Inspired by recent animated series such as Batman, Teen Titans, and Justice League, we are seeing more and more comics today being produced in this more simplified, animated looking style. This modern style has done a couple of things for the comic industry. First, it's far less time consuming to produce this type of art than traditional comic art...less time means less money. Second, and no knock on those artists, but obviously you can get away with somewhat less talent with this style as there is a minimum of detail required. Finally, much of this art today is being produced on computer, again saving time and money. This certainly accounts for the recent popularity of this style of art.

Hart takes a step-by-step approach to his instructions. On one page he shows an example of a piece of art done in traditional style and next to it, the same piece done in the simplified style. Basically this is simply a matter of less definition being added to the character. Less muscle definition, fewer or no bone structure outlines to the face and body, hair designed as "one piece" as opposed to drawing several lines of hair and curls, etc...The examples are striking in their sheer minimalism.

Now, this isn't merely a matter of taking out lines, but rather a complexly different approach to drawing figures. There's a whole change in thinking about how to construct the anatomy in this approach. Remember, you're not going for realism anymore. Fully the first 50 pages are spent just on the head and facial features. Hart will show you how to simplify the look of the eyes, nose, and mouth with dozens of examples included along the way.

Next up is the body and it's the same process as before. Simple bone and skeletal structures, simple muscle definition... Again, Hart shows dozens of examples of body types from heroes to regular guys to mad scientists. In this style, bodies are more angular...the hips and knees often come to an exaggerated point as opposed to the rounder look of traditional comic art. In defining muscles, that standard six-pack now becomes a two-pack...the shoulders and chest exceedingly broad and triangle-shaped.

Hart rounds out the book with a look at forced perspective, getting your characters to look like they are virtually jumping out of the page at you. Honestly, I believe that this book and this style of art has opened up a lot of doors to artists who maybe were not quite good enough to make it with traditional comic art. It's also allows small press publishers to compete against the bigger publishers. Heck, you even see this style of artwork showing up at major publishers like Image and Dark Horse.

It's another well-done book by Hart and perfect for the aspiring comic book artist.

If you know what your doing

If you have never drawn comics and are not much of an artist then this book is not for you. Being someone that does not draw very well this book did not help me much. After consulting with someone who is a beginning comic artist this book is very helpful. They were able to gain new perspective in anatomy and body stylization that they were not aware of before. So if you have been drawing a little while and want to advance your style technique then this book could be for you.

The only bad thing about this book is consistency due to the many different artists that worked on it. With that in mind this book is well worth having and a good resource about the adventure or Bruce Timm style of drawing.

Interesting and different, to say the least

Batchen's book is full of information and introduced me to several potential inventors of photography of whom I was unaware from reading the standard monographs in the field (e.g., Eder, Gernsheim and Gernsheim). This, however, is probably the least important of the book's many themes delivered on so many fronts. The idea that people somehow had to be ready for photography is thought provoking and different, but I still think greater weight should be placed on the conceptual leaps that had to be overcome. It is true that the optics for photography existed as early as 1685; it is equally true that the chemistry or photography was fully developed around 1775-1780. True, people were not rich enough to afford photographs and thus make the medium into a popular success, but there remains the lingering question of putting the chemistry and optics together, and if the book has a flaw, it is that Batchen gives this short shrift - but this material is available in abundance elsewhere. On the whole, for the interested (and already fairly well informed) layperson and specialist in the history of photography, this is excellent, eye opening and, yes, even mind bending reading. Someone wiser (and much funnier) than I said that he disliked arguments because they are always vulgar and often convincing - and much of what Batchen says is convincing. Even if I ultimately disagree with a lot of Batchen's conclusions, at least he has introduced me to some alternatives I did not think of on my own. Beyond this, questions arise regarding the nature of technology, innovation and invention. Ultimately, what is the purpose of technology? What prompts invention? What leads one to make the conceptual leap that links optics with chemistry and yields something as earth shaking as photography? Batchen's book seems as good a place as any when approaching questions such as these, at least on a serious, scholarly level.
