The Real Deal

There are many so-called "How To" books around but this one by Bernie Griffiths is The Real Deal.

My photography business was "kick-started" by attending Bernie's seminars and referring to his notes over 20 years ago. I am still in business today thanks to Bernie's mentoring and solid advice.

This book is a step by step instructional which actually works provided the reader adheres to the methods therin. Bernie guides the reader through from setting up a photography business to management, systems, marketing and the all important sales techniques that can be life changing. Bernie has mentored some of Australia's most successful photographers one of which who ended up running studios both here and in the USA.

The depth of knowledge in this book reflects not only the years of hands on working in his successful wedding and portrait studios, but the many tried and true systems Bernie employed.

Not to be one who dwells in past glories, Bernie has always embraced the ever changing trends and technology in the photography industry and is an industry leader.

This book is a must-have for anyone who wants to either realise their passion and start a photography business, or for those who want to move forward and grow their business.

Fantastic book for anyone interested in photography

The author has been a professional photographer for over 40 years so shares a wealth of insider information, tips and tricks for anyone who wants to improve their photography.

I really enjoyed this book and love his writing and communication style. You can see that he really loves the topic and wants to help others to get much better results with their photography too.

He is a mentor and coach to other photographers, so he has a great teaching style.

I highly recommend this book. It will be well worth your time to read it, you'll find it's a resource manual for many years to come.

Success Secrets of a Professional Photographer

There are many people interested in photography and turning professional today, and there seem to be almost as many experts willing to guide them along the way! However, to my mind, to be successful in business means being able to stick it for ten years or more. It's easy to start a business and make a little money in the first year, but much harder to establish a business that provides for you and your family for a decade or more. So with those thoughts in mind, I'd like to recommend Bernie Griffith's book. I know Bernie. I've attended his seminars. I've read his book. He is a straight shooter, telling people how it really is and his book is a great educational insight into what it takes to be a successful wedding and portrait photographer. I liked his introduction about his earlier life, but the best value comes from all the little hints and suggestions. No, he hasn't included absolutely everything he knows about business - that would take a much larger book - but if you're looking for a guide to professional photography, this is a great place to start. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Randi Wissler- Mitchell graduated from the University of Iowa, where she majored in English and studied in the Writer's Workshop. She moved to California, where she became a professional freestyle skiier at Lake Tahoe, while finishing a second Bachelor's Degree in French at California State, Sacramento. She moved to France where she completed a Master's in French Literature at the University of Grenoble, and then worked as a cocktail waitress in Monte Carlo. At the time, Randi was teaching English to French children in a "Lyc�e" on the C�te D'Azur. Randi traveled around Europe teaching English for years before a TEFL certificate was ever required. In 2009, she got her TEFL Certificate in Cusco, Peru, and taught English in Cusco for a year.She also received Certification for International Exam Preparation. Since returning to the US, she has completed a Master's Degree and Teaching Certificate in English and Structured English Immersion. She is now an Instructor at Texas Intensive English Program in Austin, Texas. Four years ago, her students asked her to make a chart of all the tenses on one page, because they were having so much trouble with English verb tenses. From that chart, she has developed an entire color-coded system for teaching English verb tenses. The students have raved about it, and asked her to publish a book. She has written a manual for students and teachers which is a good supplement to any ESL teaching program. Her book "English Tenses at A Glance" is a revolutionary way to teach and learn the English verb tenses.

There Is Help for the ESL Students with English Verb Tenses: Get This Book!

This is a wonderful book for my ESL tutee who will be entering middle school late this summer. He has difficulty in using the correct English tense. This endearing book has helped many other ESL students and this will help my tutee. His compositions and oral English will improve. Though he is naturally shy, he likes to read, and I test him on books on literature and English grammar, punctuation, and composition.

This is a great book for anyone who is struggling to learn English, one of the most difficult languages to learn, especially the many new street talk phrases. As a native speaker of another language other than English, I understand the difficulty that parents and students face in trying to enhance their oral/written English skills.

Since his heroin overdose in 1980, Darby Crash has become a symbol of punk irreverence, but his posthumous fame has tended to overshadow the seminal work of the punk band he fronted, the Germs. Mullen (who coauthored We Got the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of L.A. Punk), along with ex-Germs drummer Bolles and writer Parfrey, quickly deconstructs the myth of Crash (n Jan Paul Beahm) to reveal an embattled and confused soul who struggled with drug use and his homosexuality. Featuring raw quotations from Crash's peers in the burgeoning 1970s West Coast punk scene, the book offers both positive and negative views of the singer and the scene that raised him. Crash's fans were known for their cultish reverence, and Crash himself is shown to be a self-conscious misfit who used psychological ploys to enlist followers. It is unlikely that this book will reach a wide audience and thus imbue Crash's legacy with more humanity and, in turn, the Germs with more respectability, but it does strengthen the growing literature on American punk music. Recommended for popular music collections, especially as a complement to We Got the Neutron Bomb, which covers similar ground and whose oral history format this book replicates. This intense oral history traces the life of a rock icon so enigmatic that few knew he was gay. The Germs had released only one album, G.I., before their leader, Darby Crash (ne Paul Beahm), 22, OD'd in a suicide pact (the other participant survived). His death, covered in detail here, just enhanced the Germs' cachet as protopunks. The book's compilers--Germs drummer Don Bolles is one of them--also serve up a lot about early West Coast punk, reported by a virtual punk who's who, sans, perhaps refreshingly, Henry Rollins, but including Jello Biafra, Exene Cervenka, Phranc ("America's Favorite Jewish Lesbian Folksinger"), and two who figured massively in the love triangle that, among many other factors, precipitated Darby's last exit, Gerber ("Queen of L.A. Punk") and Rob Henley. Evocative as hell of the punk ethos ("Part of the $400 [for the overdose drugs] was my rent money," mourns Ella Black), not least because of scads of photos of baby-faced adolescents (some nude) trying to look ugly. breathtaking cultural history

As a cultural history of Los Angeles in the 1970s, this book can't be beat.

Visually stunning photographs and a refreshing, multiperspective commentary bring qualities of both Faulkner and the blog together in a chronological progression to the suicide of Darby Crash. I especially enjoyed the coroner's document and the funeral bill, but all the exhibits were great.

The book includes an unbelievable involvement of church and state in the Scientology influenced Innovative Program School in Los Angeles which 'graduated' Darby in 1976. This section once again shows the importance of LSD in late 20th century culture.

The dynamic of LA punk as it emerged in artfag circles, was subsumed in a Huntington Beach testosterone surge of disaffection and violence consuming punk and creating thrash hardcore. Darby Crash's closeted homosexuality and his apparent fear of rejection for it in late 70's culture, adds historical depth to the effects of discrimination, even among the young.

The book is compelling. I missed Darby's show at the Mabuhay, although I saw the other big show of the weekend, the Sex Pistols at Winterland.

The great strength of the book is the stylistic approach, the book being years in the making. Adding the content into that, I think it's the biggest thing in American literature since Douglas Coupland's Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture in 1991.

Best music history I have ever seen or read.

Disspelling the numerous rumours,myths and outright lies this book gives quite a detailed oral history of the legendary Darby Crash, founder and singer-songwriter of the infamous ,seminal L.A punk band The Germs (a band you either love or hate with equal passion).Although this book does away with alot of the misinformation commonly regarded as fact and certainly puts a much clearer focus into the events that led up to Darbys death you cant help but still feel,despite the intense details provided by those close to him that no one ever truly "knew" Darby and he will forever remain the enigma he wanted to be all along.As a fan (one of my children is actually named Darby)this book was indeed a "must have" and a thoughly good read but it certainly left me wanting more(time to read Mr.Mullens other book on LA Punk!)and with many "what if?" questions.This book is really only for the true Germs fan (which there are many despite Pat Smears' assertion in the book that they were only a "teeshirt" band and "no one really listened to the music "-HAHAHA)so I wouldnt really recomend it to the non-intiated. ...........Footnote: Does anyone know if there is ever going to be an "X" book???? The worlds ready!!!!

Good Survey that Begs for a Revised Edition

Arndt traces the origins of the term "economic development" and the change in its dominant meanings from ones dealing primarily with economic growth to those dealing with social equity/justice. Two of the last three chapters outline the critiques of the "left" (i.e. dependency theorists and neo-Marxists) and the "right" (i.e. Westerners skeptical of developing countries' capacities for economic development and non-Westerners who worry that it has corrosive effects on traditional societies). This is a good historical survey of the idea from the end of World War II through the early 1980s.
For anyone with some familiarity with contemporary development literature, what is striking is what is missing. There is no discussion of the impact of the monetarist or Austrian schools on economic development. While not many of these economists focused on economic development, their work was influential in changing the decision-making emphases of policymakers in the 1980s and 1990s. The return to largely neoliberal approaches in development aid by the World Bank and individual countries has been quite controversial in the economic and public policy literatures, but is not addressed here. As a previous reviewer noted there is scant discussion of the "Asian tigers" model of economic development. Perhaps, these omissions are due to its publication date of 1987. This work begs for a revised edition.
Basically, this is a good starting point especially for those interested in policy and political economy. However, you also need to turn elsewhere to understand developments of the last 20 years. (BTW for those who like to write in the margins, this work has half-inch outer ones.)

If you have been using a Mac for any length ...

If you have been using a Mac for any length of time most of the information in this book will be redundant. A real handicap to this publication are the screen shots in the book version, expesialy for the new user. The words are too small and illegible in the screen shots even with a magnifing glass. A hastily produced publication. I would recoment shopping around at perhaps a local bookstore to see what you get.
