Cowan presents a passionate and articulate examination of the social impact of the evolving globalized infrastructure used to move physical goods from one end of the planet to the other. She begins by tracing the historic codependency of trade and military requirements. Commerce at a distance has always required security and the military has always needed supply chains, for as Napoleon once noted, “an army travels on its stomach”. The same conduits are used for weapons, as for consumer goods, food, aid and people. The first part of the book provides a historic background from Alexander the Great's supply lines to the Baron Haussman's redesign of Paris and the development of the shipping container as a standardized unit of transport, the key benefit mentioned being the reduction of labour costs.

Using maps Cowan illustrates how logistics has recast the world from nations with boundaries into gateways and transport corridors, logistic spaces with economic, political and security interests of their own. The model now being used around the world for this is Dubai Logistcis City (DLC), replicated in the Philipines at Gateway Logicists City (GGLC) and Basra Logistics City (Iraq) and the now underdevelopment Tsawwassen Gateway Logistics in British Columbia. Not surprisingly the first three are all replace military bases which were designed with security and self containment in mind. They are also all viewed as important regional economic drivers. The internationally sponsored Transportion Worker Identification Code protocol (TWIC), while designed to ensure that individual posing potential security risks not have access to commercial supply chains, becomes an Orwellian dystopia replete with security zones, biometrics, gating and cameras. The rational is protection from terrorism, theft and sabotage, but the burden of proof is often placed on the employee; the requirements are invasive, an end run around labour laws.

Chapter 4 on Somali piracy was especially interesting. Though pirates became instruments of state policy during the 16th-18th century (Barbary pirates, English and French buccaneers), they were most often viewed as outside the law, and by operating on the high seas, beyond it's reach, leading to a cooperative development of international law between sovereign nations. Somalia, which is widely regarded as a collapsed state unable to police itself or its territory, has a broad 3000 km coastline that has been subject to over fishing by foreign trawlers and a convenient dumping ground for biomedical, electronic and even nuclear waste. For their part, Somali pirates have stylized themselves as the Somali Coast Guard, holding ships hostage and demanding multi-million dollar ransoms. The Gulf of Aden lies at the gateway to the Suez Canal, through which flows 95% of European trade with the far east, a significant choke-point. The cost of insurance alone increased 40 fold between 2007 and 2011, and the policing of the Gulf has resulted in a mix of state and private security costing an estimated 5.5 billion/year. It's a hot mess of unethical dumping, legitimate international interests, criminal piracy and ongoing tragedy.

The oddly titled final chapter “Rough Trade? Sex, Death and the Queer Nature of Circulation” starts well with a comparison between the National Geographic made for TV documentary series “Great Migrations” and it's sponsor UPS. UPS used the production to brand itself with the slogan “We *heart *logistics” and Cowan shows how the themes of mobility and resilience in the natural world resonate with the mission of a delivery company, which was the sponsor's motivation. The 2nd half of the chapter, about 12 pages, attempts a secondary argument analogizing Cowan's previous analysis to the historic oppression of the gay community, thus explaining the chapter's title but the intersectionality approach is so far fetched as to seriously detract from the book. This aside, author makes a good case that logistic systems are an epi-phenomena of the military-industrial complex and that there is a real need to integrate social justice principles to counterbalance some of the command and control excesses of supply chain economics.

Psychotherapist Gray ( What You Feel You Can Heal ) adds to the growing number of self-help books that assess marital and relationship problems in terms of distinct and pervasive gender differences. Unfortunately, his overuse of gimmicky, often silly analogies and metaphors makes his otherwise down-to-earth guide hard to take seriously. Here Martians (men) play Mr. Fix-It while Venusians (women) run the Home-Improvement Committee; when upset, Martians "go to their caves" (to sort things out alone) while Venusians "go to the well" (for emotional cleansing). While graphically illustrative, the hyperbolic, overextended comparisons, particularly in the chapters that refer to men as rubber bands and women as waves, significantly detract from Gray's realistic insights.

Take what works, leave the rest

I've mixed feelings on this book. On one hand, it articulates a good framework for the gender generalities that I've observed and for the most part, the author takes care not to paint with a broad brush. In fact, his intro takes care to acknowledge individual differences within that gender spectrum. He also provides a lot of good strategies for peacemaking and reconciliation as well, like the Love Letters. I especially liked the ending chapter on the seasons of love-- it matches what I've seen in long-term relationships.

On the other hand, I definitely felt that much of his advice was very heavily slanted in the man's favor, at significant risk of turning the woman into a doormat. For example, when a man withdraws, the author advises the woman to basically just accept it if the man doesn't want to come out and provide the needed or requested support. This ranges from simple requests like "could you take out the trash" to rather necessary errands: "could you take me to the shop to pick up my car so I can go to work" or "could you pick up our kid from school" (taking examples from the book). If someone resisted doing those last two things, especially on a regular basis, I would seriously question his/her priorities, as well as their suitability as a partner and parent.

I would also regard an unwillingness to provide emotional support as a yellow flag, especially if the onus for emotional maintenance falls on one party-- in this book's case, it's usually the woman. Is the man upset? The woman has to give him space and be caring and accepting, no matter how he responds. Is the woman upset? She has to figure out why she's upset, tell the man she's upset, then sit back and... basically leave the rest up to him. If he becomes caring and accepting in turn, great. If he's still distant, then the onus falls back on her to do more work. In other words, many, if not most, of the author's proposed sacrifices seem to fall on the woman to bear, because men are the way they are (i.e., from Mars). I can't really think of a section in which he says, "men, if a woman responds this way, just accept it-- that's how women are."

Overall, I'd keep and re-read the book for its insights, but it's very much picking out what works and glossing over the rest.

Eye Opener

This book has definitely opened my eyes on not just men but more of myself. I felt like everything that was written in book in regards to women was about me and it just calmed me and helped me realize that I wasn't crazy lol.. It definitely brought in a great perspective on how men could be and saw many issues my partner and I experienced because we didn't understand each others differences and because we weren't understanding we were unable to provide each other what we truly needed.

The book is a very read and makes a lot of great points in my opinion but at the end it is up to every single one of us to put the effort into practice the points that book brings upon and that's the hardest part.. But I will say that I am incredibly happy I read this, as it has made me more aware of myself and my partner and I look forward to practicing and accepting our differences.

Every couple needs this book

This is my second time buying this book. The first one, I loved so much I let someone who I thought could use it, borrow it and they never returned it. I bought it again because its been a few years since I originally read it and my husband decided that he wanted to read it now. It really does have great tips on communicating with your spouse. Men and women clearly think differently and this is a great tool at understanding what they are really trying to communicate.
Communication has always been a great part of our marriage but this book took that to a whole new level. Even though my husband is just now reading it, it still has been valuable in our marriage. Because of this book I am able to understand some of the things he does. Its a great tool for helping any marriage get through tough patches.

Making Intercultural Teams Work

At a time when criticism runs high about "essentialist" approaches to understanding culture and cultures, Richard Lewis has been unflagging in insisting upon exploring the cultural tendencies. He addresses the thinking and behaviors that are likely to constitute our identity and steer our behavior and our reactions to each other when working together with others different from ourselves. Those who know his previous work have probably been most struck by his ability to make the various processes of communication, management and collaboration visible in the form of simple diagrams that are a relief from the academic blah-blah and the judgmental jargon that often surrounds them. Lewis's picture language often comes as a great relief to those looking to succinctly frame a cultural discourse in a handout or a PowerPoint slide.
Lewis forces us to ask the question of how much simplification is useful and how much is likely to feed our eternal tendency to simplistic stereotyping. First of all, like most decent professionals in the intercultural field, Lewis is absolutely clear about the fact that it is cultural discourse, cultural behavioral tendencies that are being identified--that the menu is not the meal. What is painted broad brush is the background, not the detail of the masterpiece each of us tries to paint from what we have been given and what we have learned. This background is real, and while there may be strong reasons to examine it carefully, case by case, one would have to be deliberately blind to not be able to identify the discourse, values and behavior that cluster in certain populations, groups, and are likely to show themselves in everyday collaboration.
Critics of essentialism are right in pointing out the dangers of oversimplification and the tendency to reinforce perceptions that are damaging and counterproductive. They are also right in looking at the socially constructed realities in which our discourses and identities are both shaped and imprisoned. It is urgent that we address these principalities and powers for a more just future for ourselves and those who will inhabit this tiny but still somewhat blue planet. However, dismissing our best guesses at knowing each other is both counterproductive and likely to leave us without the resources and handles we need to create the more important changes we seek.
This implies categorization, and those who already know the work of Richard Lewis are probably familiar with his tripartite model of cultural tendencies that posits three major categories: linear-active, multi-active, and reactive. In the first part of this book, Lewis unfolds and illustrates as well as provides examples of how these general classifications might work as a starting point for interpreting and responding to multiple others. The principal points of the book are illustrated with small case studies throughout. The focus of When Teams Collide is how to apply cultural insight to team performance.
The second chapter takes a look at how teams are formed and organized and the challenges of their priorities in completing the task or tasks, which is their raison d'�tre. A good deal of the book looks at language, a particularly important topic at a moment when English or, "Globish" as some say, serves as a lingua franca, but not an exclusive one, in international business.
The third chapter addresses leadership styles in the international team. Here there are multiple images diagramming cultural leadership style tendencies. The core structure of some of them is readily identifiable from Lewis's previous work, but generally expanded here to reveal a wider range of influences leading to how the manager of a specific culture is likely to experience his or her priorities and use his or her time when it comes to leadership style and behavior. Interesting, and perhaps controversial, is Lewis's courage in accepting and discussing the religious dimension of leadership and collaboration that may be explicitly involved or provide the ambience for managerial and team behavior. This has long been the "elephant in the room" that rarely gets noticed from the perspective of how it contributes to thinking, interpersonal behavior and decision-making. There is an interesting set of illustrations of the priorities and behaviors that shape the work and communication hub managers from different cultures on a day-to-day basis.
Chapter 5 addresses the profiles of team members from the perspective of assisting the manager or leader to guide diversity and assure performance. It is also here that Lewis speaks of the durability of culture that underlies the interpretations of the individuals affected by it. Lewis provides well over twenty national profiles of individual managers representative of their cultures--the largest single section of the book, illustrating how cultural thinking and priorities are carried out in everyday team management by managers of diverse backgrounds.
The sixth chapter returns to the use of language by discussing "Speech Styles And Meeting Procedures," and briefly reviews a variety of communication patterns, opening the way for a more detailed discussion of "Communicating in English" in Chapter 7 where we get a look at numerous examples of "coded speech, even including a small chart of politically correct and politically incorrect terminology. PC is perhaps a new form of US indirection in speech, but a number of the examples are hard to read without laughing out loud. The rest of the chapter addresses the importance of various habits of listening according to their slice size on pie charts, a number of these charts are extrapolated from Lewis's earlier work, When Cultures Collide.
Chapter 8 is a short disquisition on the use of humor in multicultural teams. I think it can be summed up in the perception that every culture has its own humor that can be expressed and applied in different ways and situations. However, humor remains a minefield in intercultural communication, and while Anglos, Brits and Americans may love wit and storytelling respectively, it takes a lot of imagination and inventiveness to explore, understand, and use humor in a way that it is constructive in multicultural team.
A ninth chapter on decision-making is both about the ways in which decisions are taken in different cultures and, how they're likely to be received, and this is of course intimately linked with the topic of Chapter 10, "Behaving Ethically." This, in my opinion, is far too short a chapter for a topic that is far too complicated. It uses as a case study the 2002 World Cup, perhaps topical in the sense that controversy is raging at the moment about the unethical, exploitative behaviors of several of the corporate suppliers to the upcoming London Olympics, which were intended to be the most human and eco-friendly event in the history of the games.
Chapter 11 is a critical one. "Trust in the team" is both an interpersonal matter and a matter of the characteristics that we identify in ourselves and others that can make or break trust, or simply erode it or even keep it from happening. All kinds of different elements can be pointed to in the construction and destruction of trust. We are little used to taking seriously small things that drive big decisions. Is it out of place to assert that "Germans... Want to trust individuals who are clean, tidy, and wear new clothes?" The problem is that many of these little things are quite impactful at an unconscious level, and we need to bring them to the conscious level to decide whether to act on them or dismiss them. Lewis writes often in a very direct style that will delight some and offend others. The best way to put it is that he is the kind of person who is willing to call a "spade", "a bloody shovel." In determining what is real and what is right, it is not just our unconscious processes that are involved, but our conscious understanding of, and might I say, commitment to culturally established processes of thought and what we have determined to be our definition of truth.
When Teams Collide is meant to be a practical and readable book, and it is. And while it discusses cultural behavior worldwide, it is inevitably representative of our Western take on ourselves and others, and, perhaps, one of our main challenges in this whole multicultural business is not to take ourselves too seriously, a behavior which Lewis's style fortunately supports, reminding us in a way that we have an awful lot to learn. Perhaps the appendix, "Cultural Spectacles" dealing with the lenses we look through when we gaze at each other is a most fitting conclusion. Summing it up is the phrase, "In an international team, nobody is normal," as seen through the eyes of others. Despite the individualism that insists that each person is unique and the challenges of understanding how real and how deep hybridity may be, despite the rising incidence of third culture kids, total cosmopolitanism is a long way off, and perhaps neither a reachable nor desirable goal. Paradoxically, we often pose ourselves as such simply to avoid the pain of being identified with something that someone else does not like about us or about the parents or places we came from. While there are some female examples, gender influences in cultural constructions is largely absent from the book.

Practical advice on the challenges facing today's multinational teams

Communications consultant Richard D. Lewis builds on his international experience to address a big stumbling block for global companies: the inability of people on multinational teams to cooperate. Members' conscious or unconscious cultural assumptions lead to the danger of unintentionally offending (or being offended by) other members. Lewis warns of the hazards of stereotyping various nationalities, and then he takes that risk often, though he bases his descriptions of cultural inclinations on extended research into cooperation on multinational teams. He says understanding leaders can overcome team members' widely differing organizational, linguistic and ethical perspectives. Your reaction will depend on whether you see his descriptions as illuminating or stereotyping. Lewis does provide practical steps for resolving cultural conflicts in 11 pivotal areas. Each chapter ends with case studies and includes well-intended but hard-to-interpret graphics. Fortunately, getAbstract finds the written text stands on its own.

Read with Caution

While Richard D. Lewis provides some good advice about dealing with other cultures, one must read this book with caution. He crosses the line and provides some appalling information as serious, to be heeded advice. Especially regarding what he calls "politically correct" preferred expressions, as well as some ill-chosen examples on p. 225. If anyone used some of these "politically correct" phrases in the U.S., s/he will be looked upon very negatively or as very offensive. This leads me to be suspect about the rest of his advice.
