articulating postcolonial experience

If there's one thing that this book offers it is the articulation of gaps and fissures that have been long denied and silenced by the grand narratives of history operating in the hegemonic code of linear western imperialism. This book speaks to us in a special way by virtue of our colonial experience which allows us to question the very foundation of most historical discourses that have been in our curricula and educational system. Reading Bhabha's article DissemiNation, enlightens one in the boundaries and margins of the discourses together with their historical contingencies. Along with The Location of Culture one cannot truly understand postcolonial experience without referring to these books by Homi K. Bhabha.

How unfortunate that the previous reviewer had to resort to questioning a fellow reader's intellect and ability to read what is undoubtedly a complicately structured text. This type of comment epitimises the elitism that Bhabha is himself charged with. The inaccessability of this text to the wide majority of readers(and that is not due to a need for reading classes) has left Bhabha's 'liminal space' an area of discussion accessible only to a handful of individuals whose academic capital apparently surpasses that of their humility. There is no attempt made at any point in this book to explain what are undoubdtedly fascinating concepts in laymans terms, thereby excluding the vast majority of readers of all social strata for whom reading is a pleasure and not a struggle .

part of the problem of the review one of the readers has left is the reading as the non-European world as "the periphery". Thank you for so neatly exemplifying the point of postcolonial studies with your sweeping simplification about an entire discourse, because you "dislike it".
No, I dont think you should read Bhabha, because you're missing the entire point quite thoroughly.

Gr 3-7–An absorbing story based on the shark attacks in New Jersey in 1916. Chet Roscoe, 10, moves in with his uncle while his father looks for work in California. He works in his uncle's diner and meets some local boys with whom he becomes friends. A story hits the papers about a shark attack about 10 miles away and their little town dismisses it as a fake, but a local fisherman begs to differ. The boys play a series of pranks on one another, but when Chet comes face to face with the shark in the river, the friends refuse to believe him, until they see it themselves. Black-and-white illustrations that resemble old photographs enhance the events of the story. Tarshis incorporates information about the real attacks and fictionalizes it, then follows the story with facts about the attacks and sharks. There couldn't be a shark in the creek. That was crazy.

Chet tried to laugh, but T.J. was still standing there with that terrified look on his face. And now Dewey was rushing through the water towards the grass.

"Get out of the water!" he yelled.

Because that black triangle was coming right at them. Chet swam as fast as he could, but T.J. just stood there, frozen.

"T.J.!" Chet shouted. "Hurry!"

But it was too late.

The shark was heading right for T.J.

T.J. screamed.

There was a huge splash.

And then he was gone.

All my I SURVIVED books look worn, which is a good thing!

I am a 4th grade teacher and I cannot keep the I Survived books in my classroom library neat. The boys read them and constantly fight over them. The Shark Attacks of 1916 was no different- it already looks worn. I love when I find books that students actually read, and am thrilled that the boys found a series they love sooo much. I also like how they teach history, seem to have some great character lessons, and are high interest! I would buy any book from this series because the book will actually be read and enjoyed.

This book got my 9yr old son to read!!

We have struggled getting my 9yr old son to read over the past couple of years. He just wasn't interested and it has been a struggle. He stumbled accross the I survived series and he doesn't want to put the book down. I think he finds the story exciting, and relates to the characters. He loves talking about it after he's done reaading. This is a mother's dream! I only wish there were more books in the series!

Great book!

I bought this book through Amazon when I saw an elementary boy reading it. I really like the book! It's fast and easy to read, and based on (and includes) real happenings. There are two more books in the series, too, which I am also getting: "I survived the sinking of the Titanic," and "I survived Hurricane Katrina."

In this book Chet is living with his uncle in a new town, and going to a new school. He feels alone and unloved. He starts to feel accepted by a group of boys until they play a prank on him. That really hurts, but his uncle tells him that that is the way of boys: They play a prank on you, so now you play one back on them to show you're ready to be friends! Chet does, but it backfires; they can't handle it and stop playing with him.

Frustrated, Chet goes to their swimming hole to clean it up. Then he sees (and is almost grabbed) by a shark. However, no one believes him when he goes running into town--except one old captain. The formerly friendly boys joke about it, even "tempting" the shark--which they don't believe is real--by jumping in the creek. But...then guess who comes along, and guess who rescues the boys!

The pictures in this book are absolutely well-drawn as well.

The science behind How to Win Friends and Influence People

My favorite genre of reading material is self improvement. I am continuously trying to improve my interpersonal communication and relationship building skills. I already reviewed the book 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' and raved about how applicable and effective the principles there are. I like this book because it nicely compliments that best seller.

How to Win Friends is more of the anecdotal side of things, i.e. stories of people who applied the principles and had great results. This book however is more of the scientific side of things; the WHY it works.

The author draws from his years of professional experience in the FBI, which gives him immediate credibility and you can feel confident you are getting great and accurate information. Also, it's just freaking interesting! I couldn't put it down! Every page is filled with captivating information, stories, and illustrations that really help you understand the concepts in a fun way.

I highly recommend this book to anybody hoping to learn more about creating social interactions, building meaningful relationships, and as the title states, getting people to like you!

Engaging Read!

I absolutely loved The Like Switch. I plan to use it in a book study in my work with new teachers as they learn to build professional relationships with children, parents, colleagues. The book is written with amazing insight, through the lens of a former FBI agent whose success depended upon his ability to use scientific knowledge of human behavior to navigate the world of espionage. It is an interesting study in friendship, romance, and just all around relationship building. This is a book I'll read over and over again.

You Don't Have To Be A Spy To Benefit From Schafer's Techniques!

This was really fascinating. I blew through it pretty quickly because the tips and anecdotes pull you in, but it's a book that actually deserves serious study. Re-reading it (probably more than once!) will be necessary to fully extract all the information. Miraculously, it avoids being dry while still managing to be thoroughly educational. Whether you're attempting to be more outgoing or just wish you could detect deception, this is definitely on-point, with clear examples and illustrations. There are ample discussions regarding pitfalls to avoid, with some cautionary tales featuring names you'd recognize.

About the Author
Richard Pipes is a historian of Russia, and since 1990, has been Baird Emeritus Professor of History at Harvard University. His other books include The Russian Revolution and Russia under the Bolshevik Regime.

Best of the Set

I think this is the best of what I guess you would call Pipes' "Revolutionary Trilogy." "The Russian Revolution," perhaps two or three times the length, is impaired a bit by Pipes' sometimes tedious moral-pointing. "Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime" seems a bit less ambitious than the other two, and in any event it is surely the one least likely to survive the torrent of new material that is becoming available after the fall.
What distinguishes Russia in Pipes' eye is the tradition of "patrimonialism" -- as a political category, a coinage of Pipes' own, though with its roots in Weber, in Hobbes and Bodin, even in Aristotle. Pipes means to denote "a regime where the rights of sovereignty and those of ownership blend to the point of becoming indistinguishable, and political power is exercised in the same manner as economic power."
"Despotism," Pipes continues, "has much the same etymological origins, but over time it has acquired the meaning of a deviation or corruption of genuine kingship, the latter being understood to respect the property rights of subjects. The patrimonial regime, on the other hand, is a regime in its own right, not a corruption of something else."
This is a brave assertion, and Pipes remains faithful to it. Indeed, the core of the book is perhaps his chapter entitled "The Anatomy of the Patrimonial Regime," where Pipes tries to show how utterly different is the tradition of governance in Russia from the tradition in the West -- even in Western nations that we might think of as "reactionary."
There are other virtues to this book. His introductory chapter on the environment is perhaps worth the price of admission, as he retails the grim arithmetic of topsoil and grain production. His discussion of serfdom provokes all kinds of questions about the relationship between serfdom in Russia and slavery in the West.
A work of just 318 pages can hardly pretend to be the last word on the history of a great nation, and Pipes maintains no such pretention. I take it as given that much more could be said to inform, expand upon, or criticize, Pipes' perspective. But as a framework for approaching the study of Russia, it is hard for me to see how it could be bettered. As a provative contribution to the literature of political analysis generally, I should think its claim is equally strong.

Terrific, unique work

I have really come to love this book over time. First off, the author clearly explains the basic workings of all corrosion mechanisms in detail with illustrative diagrams. I have read the classic Fontana books, Schweiter's works, and hundreds of articles on corrosion of metals, polymers, coatings etc but this book takes it to another level. I have achieved an enhanced understanding of all forms of corrosion including discovery of many finicky details heretofore unbeknownst to me. For example, regarding galvanic corrosion of zinc and iron, "at temperatures above 60 C (140F), the zinc becomes cathodic and the iron becomes anodic (p. 124)." In the rusting of iron, "if Fe(Oh)2 [ferrous hydroxide] is formed on the surface of a metal very rapidly, the corrosion is prevented (a passive film)", but "the corrosion rate is very high if the ferrous iron is oxidized to ferric oxide rapidly (p. 123)." Did you know that replacing a new pipe next to the old pipe makes the new pipe anodic, meaning the new pipe will corrode (p. 131)? Also, regarding galvanic corrosion, "titanium has a tendency to polarize cathodically in seawater. Any less resistant metal attached to titanium will not undergo corrosion as would be expected because of the cathodic polarization of titanium."

In the "Types of Corrosion" chapter, the author goes into great detail to explain each mechanism in detail. On "factors affecting crevice corrosion", the author provides the following detailed list (p.140):

Have you ever seen such a thorough breakdown of crevice corrosion factors?? This is great, and it is typical of Mr. Ahmad's comprehensive approach throughout the book. Check out p.153 in the preview for an unparalled view of the anatomy of a pit. He then closes the section with an 11-point checklist for the prevention of pitting corrosion (p.162). After 150 pages of detailed insights, diagrams, and examples, this in-depth chapter finally comes to a close.

In the "Corrosion Prevention by Design" chapter, illustrations are abound on every page. If you can preview the chapter, you'll see that the author was truly intent on making his readers understand these concepts fully.

In addition, this is a great all-in-one quantitative book expecially as regard corrosion kinetics. Mr. Ahmad explains the derivations clearly and I was left with an understanding of the equations, how to use them, and the assumptions under which they are valid.

A whole chapter on atmospheric corrosion is provided, illuminating the fact that "If the atmosphere is clear and uncontaminated, corrosion is negligible at a RH as high as 99%. However, in the presence of contaminants, corrosion begins to increase around 80% RH...steel can corrode even at 35% RH in the marine environment. At a RH of 55%, a surface film of 15 molecules thick is formed on mild steel, which increases to a 90 molecular layer as the RH increases to 100%, causing an acceleration of the corrosion process (p.554)."

It goes on and on. On top of that, this jewel is available at a really reasonable price. With a publication date of 2006, this is gotta be my best pick for a corrosion textbook for the serious professional. All the major historical landmarks -- the Renaissance, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the emancipation of women, the two world wars -- wrought profound changes in attitudes to dress: with matchless skill and panache Laver related the development of costume and fashion to these social changes. A new final chapter by Christina Probert brings the history up to the present day [sic] with a detailed discussion of the enormous variety of postwar styles, including the New Look, the mini, and punk-influenced clothes. James Laver (1899-1975) was keeper of the Departments of Prints and Drawings and of Paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, from 1938 until 1959. He was also an important and pioneering fashion historian described as “the man in England who made the study of costume respectable”. Laver is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the field of fashion history, an interest in which emerged through a desire to date images accurately through the clothing depicted within. Laver defined the relationships between dress design and other applied arts, and discussed the influence of economic and social factors upon the development of fashionable taste.

Good Overview of Fashion

It was a required reading for my History of Dress class and I am glad I have read all of it. It's a very easy read and also very compact. It is full of knowledge about fashion and clothing. It is a good survey of fashion.

I've always found it hard to find books that had such a vast amount of info on historic costumes.
