Architecture Concepts: Red is Not a Color, by Bernard Tschumi

An autobiographical look at the work of a seminal modernist architect. This is the first comprehensive treatment of the architecture of Bernard Tschumi. Part monograph, part architectural theory, and part story, the book narrates a three-decade journey through a personal history of architecture and architectural ideas, intertwining theory, practice, and hypothetical projects with forty built works. From Tschumi’s many written works, such as Architecture and Disjunction and The Manhattan Transcripts to such renowned projects as the Parc de la Villette in Paris, major concert halls in Geneva, Switzerland, and in Rouen and Limoges, France, a high-rise in Manhattan, the Vacheron Constantin Headquarters in Geneva, the Paris Zoo, and the Acropolis Museum in Athens, the book presents a profusely illustrated tour through the work of the architect, set in the context of a rich history of architectural ideas. Written for the layperson as well as the specialist, the book is an entertaining narrative about the condition of architecture today.

Review
“A captivating mid-career retrospective that can be thumbed through, read, put down, and returned to over and over again. A word of warning, though: once you think you’ve finally pinned down the true essence of this mercurial mind, you read another section, even at random, and find that you have to rethink the entire thing all over again. And yet, you enjoy it.” ~Inform

The Ultimate Book of Tschumi
By Sonntag
This is the complete retrospective of a man who does more than “interestingly enough” work but one of the important shapers of contemporary architecture. The monumental 776 page volume is the essence of his career in architecture practice and academic. The book combined the theoretical/conceptual base of Manhattan Transcripts, Architecture and Disjunction, Event Cities series, etc., with his single-project focused publications on his built works including Parc de la Villette, Le Fresnoy, Zenith de Rouen, The New Acropolis Museum, etc., and monographs such as Birkhuser’s 2008 volume by Gilles Bure. It’s like one row of Ikea 31.5” wide Billy of books pact into one 7.9 x 2.7 x 9.7 inches ‘red’ brick. That’s space (and money) saving!
The format of the book is clear and easy to follow despite the complexity and quantity of the information. Tschumi’s work are organized chronologically with events relating to the time of his projects as backgrounds and influences. What about the quality of the projects? Well, let’s not waste time stating the obvious, but I have warn you that there are lots of beautiful drawings, diagrams, and images for one to indulge. After all, this is forty-plus years of Bernard Tschumi’s architecture.

A great book that truely embarks on one goal
By droidgeek
A great book that truely embarks on one goal, and that is to explain Tschumi's ideas and how he views architecture. The book is excellent and follows through multiple projects, essays, images, studies and ultimately lets you understand the beautiful work that Tschumi has accomplished. A great book to give to Student Architects, Grown Architects, and those who love architecture period.
